History lesson: in the 1960s there was a group called The Move. Their leader Roy Wood had a vision of popular instruments and classical instruments being used in the same music. He disbanded The Move and formed The Electric Light Orchestra, which included violins and cellos.
Roy Wood left to form Wizzard (whose song "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day" blasts out of our radios every day from 1st August to 24th December) and Jeff Lynne took over ELO.
If you've never heard any ELO, have a listen to "Oh Mr Postman" on B*Witched's first album and imagine a male lead singer - that's what ELO sound like!
Jeff Lynne left to become a producer and Bev Bevan, the drummer, formed a new group called ELO Part 2. Bev Bevan retired and the rest of the group decided to carry on, but they aren't allowed to use the name ELO, so they're called "The Orchestra".
I saw them two weeks ago and they were very good. No support act - they were on stage for well over two hours with a 20 minute break. They put Kelly Clarkson to shame with her 1 hr 15 minute set!
The programme cost £7.00 and actually has interviews with group members in it. I still think £7 is too much for a concert programme, but at least this one's informative. The tee shirt I bought to wear in the gym cost £15.00. Considerably better value. Next time they tour I'll be there.
I left the theatre worried about the following Saturday when I was going to see The Beach Boys. The Orchestra were so good I thought they were a tough act to follow. New thread coming for The Beach Boys.
