i have never heard of invader zim, i dont think we get that in the uk. Does family guy count as a cartoon? Yes, and it's one of the best. I also like Futurama and the Simpsons. I particluarly like Bart's prank phone calls to Moe's bar: Is Homer there? Homer who? Sexual. Is there a Homer Sexual in the bar? Cue me falling off the couch laughing while my children look puzzled. My daughter insists she knew what a homosexual was when she saw that episode but I'm sure I had that talk with her some months afterwards.

I still love the Simpsons but I dunno if I wanna go to the cinema to see the movie. They feel more like a home viewed thing to me.
Family Guy I never found funny. First episode I saw was kinda amusing but it all got old so fast and most of the voices and characters I found irritating. Same goes for American Dad which seems nearly to be the same darn show.

Same goes for American Dad which seems nearly to be the same darn show. Written by the same writer, so probably not surprising. So far we've stuck to relatively new cartoons so, as Erin called me Grandpa, it's probably up to me to bring older cartoons into the thread! Going back to the 1970s, I think I'm right in saying that "Wait Till Your Father Gets Home" was the first cartoon aimed at adults rather than children. It featured a dysfunctional family (the forerunners of The Simpsons?) but for me, the funniest character was Ralph, the next-door neighbour. He was the head of a local vigilante squad and always trying to root out "commies". I've been a fan of Sgt Bilko (not a cartoon, but bear with me - it's relevant) for as long as I can remember and it always seemed obvious to me that Top Cat was based on Bilko. TC himself, with his fast-talking money-making schemes was Bilko, Benny the Ball was Doberman (and even voiced by the same actor). The creators denied that it was based on Bilko, but I suspect that was to avoid paying royalties. Another cartoon that was based on an earlier "real-people" programme was The Flintstones, which was based on The Honeymooners starring Jackie Gleeson. No, I'm not really that old - it's been repeated. Another more recent one was The Oddball Couple which was based on The Odd Couple. It doesn't seem to have survived as well as the other two though.

They show the "classic" cartoons on the cable network Boomerang.

Was the only kid in my class it seemed who was into old black and white comedy shows and movies. I wanted to be the Bilko of my classroom

How was Tiny Toons a rip off from the Looney Toons? It was just a new (then) show with characters inspired by the orignal ones with full rights because they owned them. You even had the old characters like Bugs Bunny appear in it occasionally.

Tiny Toons was like "Looney Toon Jrs.", but not. Warner Brothers owes the rights to both, so how can a company be ripping off itself? That's like if Disney created a character called 'Mitchell Mouse' and his best friend 'Doofus'...who's an anthromorphic dog in a turtleneck sweater.
Buster Bunny, modeled after Bugs Bunny. Babs Bunny, modeled after Bugs Bunny. Plucky Duck, modeled after Daffy Duck. Hamton J. Pig, molded in the image of Porky Pig. Furrball, a cat based loosely on Sylvester. Sweetie Pie, based on Tweety Bird. Fifi La Fume, a young female version of Pepé Le Pew. Shirley the Loon, a spiritual waterbird with a Valley Girl accent; modeled after Melissa Duck. Calamity Coyote, a young Wile E. Coyote-in-training. Little Beeper, modeled after Road Runner. Dizzy Devil, a junior Taz. Montana Max, based loosely on Yosemite Sam. Elmyra Duff, loosely modeled after Elmer Fudd.
That's from the Wikipedia article.
--- Animaniacs. Anyone remember that show? Or Freakazoid! Why did that show go off the air?
